April 2015- Focus on shapes
Many of the children have begun to show an interest in shapes this month, using them to make arrangements and sharing their knowledge by naming the shapes they can see. This has led many Keyworkers to focus on shape as part of their planned, focussed activities.
Each Keygroup used a different method to explore shape in a fun and active way.
Some children used our brand new games to identify, arrange and sort shapes. Some of these games helped children to recognise the shapes of things they see around them, like a circle for the sun or a triangle on the sail of a boat.
Other Keygroups made their own games using drawn shapes and objects they found in the nursery. Children were able to match the objects to the correct shape and have begun to comment on shapes as they play their own games at nursery.
Children had a go at drawing their own shapes using whiteboards and marker pens. They drew around pre cut shapes and were keen to show everyone the diamonds and hexagons they had made.
Some of us got physical in the garden, using chalk to draw in the playground before throwing water balloons at named shapes. This made a big splash!
Others discussed colour and shape in our sensory room, using our light box to illuminate chosen shapes. This really caught the children's attention and gave them the opportunity to share their knowledge with each other.
Keyworkers are always planning fun and focussed activities based on the children's own interests to extend their knowledge and experiences. If your child is showing an interest in something in particular please do let your Keyworker know so they can incorporate this into their 'Key Group Time' activities.
