This morning we watched the live webinar which was a dairy farmer called Abi, she spoke about her farm and the process of milking the cows showing how it was done and the equipment that is used. There was a live web chat too so the children could ask her questions; we split into small groups and used the iPads and child's computer to access this, they children were very interested and it sparked some interesting questions and comments.
"How many cows do you have?"
"Look a lady"
"Cow has a calf"
"Cows eat grass"
"Tractor"
"Cows eat carrots, I eat carrots at home"
"How do cows make milk from their tummy?"
"We have milk with our breakfast"
"That's like Old McDonald"
"I drink milk from cows"
"Why do animals live on farms?"
"Why does milk come grom cows?"
In the afternoon 20 children went to visit Combe Pafford; we met with Mr Wallace who is a P.E teacher and some of the students there had set up a variety of sports day type activities in the gym hall. Some of the children were a little shy to begin with but with some adult encouragement they were soon trying out all of the games; they were very excited to be able to play with some different equipment.
After games in the hall they were then lead out to the sports field where they took part in a relay race using lightweight metal batons; this was something new for the children to try and they soon picked it up!
After their action packed half an hour they then headed to The Yellow Frog Café where they had provided some drinks and homemade cookies. Whilst sitting in the Café the children watched the fish in the large tanks and were looking in the other tanks to see what was in there.
Friday
Today we practised the games that we learnt at Combe Pafford, we did some hoop throwing, hoola hooping, climbing and relay races.
Activities for the week
"Where does food come from?"
Looking at some role play and photos of different foods, the adults discussed what the food is and if they know where it comes from, the children could then match it to the photograph, e.g: An egg, to match to the hen.
Handa's Surprise story sack
Reading the story "Handa's Surprise" and matching the pictures with the pictures in the story, discussing the different foods that are in it.
Shopping List Game
Playing the shopping list game; this involves matching the picture of food/ drink to your "shopping list"
"Making our dinner"The children are given a plate placemat and they are asked "What would you like to make for dinner?", choosing from a selection of healthy and not so healthy food and drinks to put on their plate.
The Lunchbox book
The 3 year old "Busy Butterflies" group had "The Lunchbox" book which looks at where the different foods in your lunch come from, they then also had some of these foods to taste. We have had a selection of food related books in the book corner such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Rosie's Walk, The Enormous Turnip, Oliver's Vegetables and may more.
Healthy Eating week has been a big success as it has encouraged the children to think about what they eat, what they think is healthy and the process of how the food gets to our plates. The children have really enjoyed the variety of activities and this has spilled into this week too following the children's interests and what they have taken out the experience.
Our aim for Healthy Eating Week was to teach the children the importance of knowing what healthy foods are, the importance of being active every day and that knowing what a balanced diet it. We hope you have also liked to see everything we have been getting up to the past week and that the children have been talking about it at home.
